Studio RoboticsHoliday camps

Example lessons

Our coaches write every lesson themselves. These are examples of what a session looks like.

VEX GO

Ages 7 to 8
2.5 hours

From Robotics Engineering Fundamentals

Build a car that rolls the furthest

Students build a car, roll it down a ramp, and change one thing at a time to make it go further.

What students learn

  • How wheel size, weight and friction change how far a car rolls
  • Running a fair test by changing only one thing at a time
  • Measuring distance and recording results in a table

How the session runs

  1. Build a simple four-wheel car from the VEX GO kit.
  2. Roll it down a ramp three times and measure how far it goes.
  3. Swap the wheels or add weight, then test again.
  4. Compare results as a group and explain which change worked best.

Use gears to make a fan spin faster

Students build a motorised fan and find the gear combination that makes it spin fastest.

What students learn

  • What a gear ratio is, and why a small gear turning a big gear goes slower
  • Counting turns to compare speeds
  • Trading speed for strength in a mechanism

How the session runs

  1. Build a fan driven straight from the motor.
  2. Add a pair of gears and count how many times the fan turns.
  3. Try three gear combinations and record the turns for each.
  4. Pick the fastest setup and explain why it works.

From Robotics with Python and AI

Program a robot to drive a square in Python

Students write their first Python program to drive a square, then change it to drive any shape.

What students learn

  • Writing and running Python commands to move a robot
  • Using a for loop instead of repeating the same lines
  • Working out the turning angle for any regular shape

How the session runs

  1. Drive one side of the square with a single drive command.
  2. Add a turn, then repeat the pair four times by hand.
  3. Replace the repeated lines with a for loop.
  4. Change the loop to drive a triangle and a hexagon.

Stop before the wall with the Eye Sensor

Students program a robot that drives forward and stops on its own when it sees an object ahead.

What students learn

  • Reading a sensor value in code
  • Using if and else to make a decision
  • Testing a program and fixing it when it does not work

How the session runs

  1. Attach the Eye Sensor to the front of the robot.
  2. Print the sensor reading to see how it changes near an object.
  3. Write a loop that drives until the sensor detects an object.
  4. Test on a course with obstacles and improve the stopping distance.
VEX IQ

Ages 10 to 14

From Advanced Robotics Engineering

Build a claw that picks up and stacks cubes

Students design a claw and lift for their robot, then drive it to stack three cubes as fast as they can.

What students learn

  • Designing a claw that grips without dropping
  • Using gear ratios to give a lift enough strength
  • Setting up controller buttons for driving

How the session runs

  1. Sketch two claw designs in the engineering notebook.
  2. Build the stronger design and attach it to a lift arm.
  3. Program the controller to open, close, raise and lower.
  4. Time three stacking runs and improve the slowest step.

From Competition Program

Program a 60-second autonomous skills run

Students plan and program a robot to score points on this season's field with no driver.

What students learn

  • Planning a route on a field map before writing code
  • Using the distance and optical sensors to line up accurately
  • Testing for consistency, not just one good run

How the session runs

  1. Map the scoring options on the field and plan a route.
  2. Program the first scoring move and test it five times.
  3. Add sensor checks so the robot corrects its position.
  4. Run full 60-second attempts and record the average score.
